About Me

Portrait of Philip Lau in a studio.

I am now studying the journalism graduate certificate program at Humber College. Before coming to Toronto, I completed a bachelor of laws degree with a minor in politics and public administration at the University of Hong Kong.

My interest in journalism began in 2019 when I helped my friends from an online media to cover the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. I did not do field reporting but wrote a number of explainer articles, in particular on court judgments which have profound impact on the conviction and sentencing of protestors. At that time, I realized my legal knowledge was not only applicable in a profession, but can also be spread to the general public.

My current goal is to work in a breaking news environment for print, video and digital media so that I can have a grasp of all sorts of stories. As a long-term goal, I want to become a Queen’s Park or Ottawa correspondent. Other than politics, my other beats include extreme weather and climate change, as well as Asian culture.

Aside from journalism, I am also running two social media pages voluntarily with my friends. The first one is MET WARN, a Cantonese weather media based in Hong Kong. The second one is V Hongkongers, a Canadian volunteer organization formed by newcomers from Hong Kong.
